Nvidia doubles revenue as Q2 results beat across board

Nvidia posted second-quarter results that materially exceeded expectations across the board. Earnings per share came in at $2.22 versus a consensus of $2.09, revenue reached $96.2 billion against a forecast of $92.16 billion, and adjusted gross margin held at an impressive 75%. The year-on-year dynamics are even more striking: EPS rose 111% and revenue rose 106%—in effect, the company roughly doubled over the past twelve months.

The data center segment was the critical market focus, generating $89.0 billion of revenue versus expectations of $85.86 billion and accounting for more than 92% of total sales. That segment's performance is the principal indicator of whether the investment cycle around artificial intelligence is continuing.

Perhaps most consequential was management's forward guidance, which proved bolder than the actual results. Nvidia expects revenue in the range of $105.84–$110.16 billion for the current quarter, implying further acceleration. Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress separately flagged a guide for fiscal 2028 implying roughly 70% revenue growth, well above analysts' typical assumptions of about 45%.

The technological underpinning of the outlook is the ramp to mass production of the next generation AI chip, Vera Rubin. That transition is a key test of demand sustainability: a new architecture typically triggers a refresh cycle among customers and therefore supports revenue over several subsequent quarters.

This report mattered well beyond Nvidia itself. The company represents roughly 8% of the market capitalization of the S&P 500, and its market value exceeds $5 trillion. The options market had priced a 5.4% move in either direction going into the print, and the stock's actual reaction — a 4.7% gain in late trading — was close to that expectation.

The timing of the report was notable. A summer sell-off in chipmakers had pushed the MSCI World Semiconductors index more than 20% off its June peak, and Nvidia had entered the release after its longest losing streak since 2022. For investors, the numbers were therefore less a corporate update than an answer to the central question of recent months: will the massive investments in AI infrastructure pay off? The results suggest that, at least for now, the market's investment thesis remains intact.
